To train, mentor, and support residents and community leaders living or working in Tower Hamlets in board or governance positions

Strengthen governance and decision making for organisations working in Tower Hamlets.

Is it for me?

Anyone who wants to get onto a board from with a BMC background. Anyone can take up a governance position with the right training. We have found that many people are intimidated by the idea of becoming a board member itself. The training demystifies this idea. You do not have to have a specific qualification or have been a manager first. There are many types of board and opportunities.

Eligibility

Tower Hamlets residents or Community leaders living and working in the borough from African, Asian, Arabic, Caribbean, South – East Asian, Hispanic, Latin American, dual, and multiple heritage / (Black minoritised and racialised (BMC) communities to address under representation of our communities at board level.
Open to all age groups and we welcome applications from women and young people between the ages of 16 to 25. 

People working in Tower Hamlets - Who can apply if you work in:

  • A charity, social enterprise or in a local business
  • The local authority
  • A housing association
  • Tenants Resident Association
  • A community organisation
  • In education, health or policing
  • A community activist
  • You volunteer in the community
  • An existing board member that wants to develop skills

Residents and Community Leaders

What is the time commitment?

We have 2 Formats:

Option 1. For 14 sessions over 7 months you are trained in all the key skills required from the role and legal duties of board, through to strategic and operational planning and effective decision making.

Sessions run from 10:00 am to 4:30pm

Option 2 10 masterclass sessions and access to online curriculum which take place from 3:00 to 5:30. Designed to minimise impact on working people whilst equipping you with the skills that you need.

You will be set assignments ahead of each session and homework. Assignments take 3 hours per week on average.

Timeline

  • Register your interest from 30th July 2024.

  • Applications Open 12th August 2024.

  • Deadline midnight October 14th, 2024.

  • Interviews take place October 16th – 31st, 2024

  • Programme runs from November 2024 to May 2025.

About Black on Board for Community Leadership Training

Black on Board is a governance training programme for organisations investing in Black, marginalised, and racialised communities (BMC) designed to train and mentor participants onto board positions

The programme delivers 14 sessions over 7 months and includes support to identify and apply for board positions. Our programme is tailored to the needs of clients. We have a track record of supporting 75% of students into governance positions for every programme run over 10 years.

From entry level through to senior management level. We will help your professional development and provide you with skills, networks and reflective development to develop a route map to progression.

About Diversify London for organisations recruiting board members

Diversify London was set up to diversify Voluntary Community Organisations (VCO) and social enterprises the opportunity to recruit trained board members through the Black on Board (BoB) programme.

For the Tower Hamlets BoB Community Leadership Programme we have widened the remit to:

  • Education, health, policing, and criminal justice sectors
  • Community and voluntary sector organisations
  • Social enterprise
  • Business and corporate

We provide your organisation with fully trained board ready candidates

The only eligibility criteria is that your organisation operates in the borough.
